The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) Minamata Convention on Mercury was established in 2013.  The Minamata Convention is a binding international treaty aiming to reduce mercury pollution by preventing the emission and release of mercury into the environment.  Silver-mercury amalgam restorations are a significant source of mercury pollution, and the Minamata Convention attempts to address this by calling for a voluntary phase-down of dental amalgam use.
